For many businesses, Big Data has remained a nebulous ambition; real money and time has been invested but Big Data myths have prevented some organisations from achieving anything tangible.

According to Matt Assay of readwrite.com, 2014 will be the year that all this changes.

“Many of the sillier Big Data myths will crumble to be replaced by increased experience with data-driven applications,” he predicts.

Assay goes on to explain that when it comes to harnessing disruptive technologies, the secret is to accept that ‘failure is a given’. The key, he says, is to minimise the cost of those failures.

Enterprises that have still not dipped their feet in the Big Data pool needn’t worry about being left behind. Smartdatacollective.com predicts that 2014 will be the year that big-data-as-a-service really takes off, giving small and medium enterprises access to a wealth of analytical information previously reserved for only those with deep pockets.

Gartner’s forecast reinforces this prediction, claiming that 2014 will be the turning point in the acceptance of cloud as part of Big Data strategies.

All predictions should be taken with a grain of salt, but 2014 certainly looks set to be the year that Big Data becomes a reality for business, rather than a pipedream.
